Borehole FAQ

How much does a borehole cost?

There are many factors that determine the final price of a borehole e.g. the depth of the well, the amount of casing installed, the type of formation that is drilled, the pump specifications and more. To get an estimate for your area please contact us.

How long does it take to drill a borehole?

It all depends on the depth of the well and the type of formation that is drilled, however we can drill a 100 meter well in a day depending on the rock formation. The pump installation is done after the well is drilled and the water yield is obtained.

What is a borehole?

A borehole is a shaft that is drilled into the ground vertically (or horizontally)

Can I decided where to position my borehole?

Yes you can, however we will provide a complete assessment and recommend the position that we feel has the most potential of striking water.

You can also employ the services of an independent provider who can Divine or do a Geological survey.

How deep is a borehole?

Ground formation varies from area to area which makes it difficult to give an accurate answer, however most boreholes are between 30m - 60m. There are many boreholes that we drill that are 80m and 100m and deeper.

Should I have a yield test done?

A yield test will determine the amount of water in the borehole and also give you the rate at which it can be pumped. This information is useful so that the correct size pump is installed. If this is done and the correct pump is installed it should give you many years of service and will protect the aquifer.

Will my borehole always yield the same volume of water?

Borehole yield is not always constant. Weather systems such as drought can impact the yield of a borehole.

Is borehole water safe to drink?

Yes in most cases. If you are going to use your borehole water for household use, it is recommended that you have the water tested at a water laboratory.

Do I need to register my borehole?

In Gauteng, registration is not required if the water to be used is for domestic purposes. Borehole water that is used for commercial or agricultural purposes, needs to be registered. In the Western Cape once you have drilled a borehole and water is found and utilized, the borehole needs to be registered with the Municipality. It is always good practice to check with your local authority.

How long does it take to install the pump?

The installation of the borehole pump normally takes one day. The installation of a tank system and booster pump can take an additional day or two.

Do you guarantee that you will find water?

A guarantee that water will be found is not possible.

How long will a borehole last?

We use top quality casing, drill and develop our boreholes to the highest standards and therefore your borehole should last for over 30 years.

How much space is required for your rig?

We have a variety of rigs suitable for most applications. We would however need to have a look at the site initially to make sure our equipment has the access needed.

Are you insured?

Yes, however our terms & conditions state that we are not liable for any damage to property or injury or death to any person. The client needs to point out any structures, pipes and cables that may be in the drilling area. We do take great care that minimal damage is done to gardens.

Does drilling make a mess?

Drilling can be a messy business. All the material that we drill from the borehole comes to the surface. Initially there could be a lot of dust and once water is found it can become very muddy. We work very carefully and take great care that gardens are damage to a minimum. We set up shade cloth to protect plants if required and try to divert the water and slurry so as not to damage lawns and flower beds.

How many years of experience do you have with boreholes?

Our company has over 20 years drilling experience and in that time have drilled over 2800 wells throughout Africa.

What is the diameter of the borehole?

We drill many size wells (diameter) but generally a domestic/commercial well is 165mm or 6.5 inch.

What is a "Site Establishment" cost?

This is the cost to set up our drill rig, compressor truck and equipment that is required for drilling the well. This cost included the "De-establishment" of the equipment. The process of site establishment and de-establishment can take up to 2 hours depending on the access and terrain.

What if I don't strike water?

There are occasions when water is not found when drilling. There is always a risk that a well may be "dry". In a case like this you would only pay for the site establishment , travel and the number of meters drilled.
